{"id":31,"date":"2001-09-10T23:42:42","date_gmt":"2001-09-11T03:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/steelypips.org\/weblog-test\/?p=31"},"modified":"2001-09-10T23:42:42","modified_gmt":"2001-09-11T03:42:42","slug":"mckinley_robin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/steelypips.org\/weblog\/2001\/09\/mckinley_robin\/","title":{"rendered":"McKinley, Robin: Spindle&#8217;s End"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"5604668\"><\/a> <a name=\"link_5604668\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>As promised, a <a href=\"http:\/\/steelypips.org\/reviews\/spindlesend.html\">review<\/a> of <strong><cite>Spindle&#8217;s End<\/cite> by Robin McKinley<\/strong> is now up.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d said that <cite>Spindle&#8217;s End<\/cite> was working in something of the same area as <a href=\"http:\/\/steelypips.org\/weblog\/2001\/09\/jones_diana_wyn_1\/\"><cite>Howl&#8217;s Moving Castle<\/cite><\/a>, which probably deserves explaining. They&#8217;re both doing a low-key version of <a href=\"http:\/\/steelypips.org\/paired\/pair1.html#glory_witches\"><cite>One for the Morning Glory<\/cite>&#8216;s attitude toward stories<\/a>; in this case, it&#8217;s that fairy tales have actual practical lessons to be learned. Thus, the second quote in the <cite>Spindle&#8217;s End<\/cite> review mentions bread turning into starlings, and in <cite>Howl&#8217;s Moving Castle<\/cite> &#8220;everyone knows&#8221; that the oldest of three children (such as Sophie) is doomed to fail when she sets out to seek her fortune. Of course, the plots are also based on fairy-tale-like situations, but with atypical elements stirred in.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, the prose also felt a bit similar to me. Upon thumbing through <cite>Howl&#8217;s Moving Castle<\/cite>, though, I can&#8217;t figure out why. <cite>Spindle&#8217;s End<\/cite> tends toward rich, long sentences, while Sophie&#8217;s narration doesn&#8217;t. I may have been misremembering <cite>Spindle&#8217;s End<\/cite>, or thinking of something else.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps now that I&#8217;ve got <cite>Spindle&#8217;s End<\/cite> out of my system (though it was enjoyable to do so, as I really like that book), I can get back to reducing my to-be-read pile&nbsp;.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As promised, a review of Spindle&#8217;s End by Robin McKinley is now up.
